Karani Community Development Centre (KCDC)
Mugu | Province 6

History and Key Successes of the Organisation
A Brief History of the Organisation
Karani Community Development Centre (KCDC) is a local Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) of Mugu district. KCDC’s area of work covers Mangri, Pulu, Kimri and Dolphu of Mugum Karmarong Rural Municipality. The Karan belt is the remotest and geographically the most difficult area, with high and low hills and mountains. The majority of the ethnic population Karmarong live there. It is located in the northern part of mid-west Nepal.
Being indigenous people in Mugu they have their own distinct languages, cultures, social and political institutions that are very different from those found in mainstream society. They are facing the same experiences of discrimination and marginalisation as other ethnic minorities however there are very important differences in terms of their rights and identity. It was primarily to address this identity issue that the organisation was set up by Karmarong Janajati youth leaders. The Organisation was formerly known as Karmarong Milan Kendra but changed its name to Karani Community Development Centre (KCDC) in 2008.
After beginning it’s partnership with UMN, KCDC has been addressing the needs and problems of people in the Karan Belt through education, health and livelihoods programmes. The Organisation has grown in size and is also able to access other resource providers. KCDC has its own strategic plan to address the long term needs of the people in the Karan Belt.

- 75 HHs have practiced kitchen gardening in Karan Belt;
